Aglets are often made of plastic or metal.  They are used on each end of a shoelace. An aglet keeps the fibers of the lace or cord from unraveling.  Its firmness and narrow profile make it easier to hold and easier to feed through eyelets.

A shoelace consists of only two components: the woven tape that pulls the shoe tightly together, and the aglet, the hardened, taped end that fits through the eyelets on a shoe or boot.  There is one simple way to create an aglet is to wrap adhesive tape two or three times around the end of the shoelace. Then Combine with glue for added security. Drip wax or resin onto the lace end and roll it between your fingers while still warm.  The word “aglet”  originates from Old French “aguillette” meaning “needle”. This in turn comes from the original Latin word for needle: “acus”. Hence, an “aglet” is like a short “needle” at the end of a shoelace.
